		<description>Jami Reimer&#38;nbsp;interdisciplinary &#38;nbsp;artist media / about / contact / ︎
Soft tongues: a bioacoustic operaThe tongue of the frog is of the softest known biological materials on this planet. It is this softness that yields the stickiness needed to pluck a fly from mid air, slough skin in perpetual acts of self-consumption, and stretch voice in promulgating chorusing networks.

Joined by bioacousticians, Jami’s field recorder, and an amphibious choir, this work invites full swamp submersion as we listen episodically through the shapeshifting life (and afterlife) cycle of the frog.

Speak in tongues! Breath through your skin! Inherit the earth!
Soft tongues interweaves solo and choral singing, text, video, and field recording practices in an ongoing and shifting investigation around chorusing— specifically, into the overlapping vocal terrains between humans and amphibians. Beginning in 2022 with a bioacoustic field residency undertaken in collaboration with the Amphibian Natural History Lab at the University of Campinas, Brazil, Soft tongues: a bioacoustic opera, plays with the science recording as a form of subjective listening. With sound catalogues of extinct frogs and the artist’s own recordings of wetland choruses, Reimer composes immersive listening experiences inflected by mythological songs, speculative soundscapes, and ‘eavesdropped’ science recordings. Soft tongues: a bioacoustic opera interrogates the relational, adhesive, and compounding qualities of voice, and the listening that tethers it.

Iterations of Soft tongues include solo version for voice and stereo or quadraphonic sound and video, or staged ensemble version for soloist and choral/dancing ensemble&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Jami Reimer&#38;nbsp;interdisciplinary &#38;nbsp;artist media / about / contact / ︎
 Methuselah&#38;nbsp;(in development)On December 8th, 2023, the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) was officially moved from the federal Canadian Species At Risk Act status as a species of “special concern” and was reclassified as endangered, that is, “facing imminent extirpation or even extinction” (SARA).
Each year, the fragile insect makes its way from Point Pelee Ontario towards the Oyamel forests in the Mexican state of Michoácan. This astonishing creature sets off in what will be a multi-generational journey across 5000 kilometres through the forests of the Northern Hemisphere, through the dangerously shifting climates, ravaged habitats, and a dwindling milkweed food supply. Only the fourth generation, the methuselah generation, will land and roost at the southbound destination in El Rosario in the Mexican state of Michoácan.

Methuselah is a new interdisciplinary work-in-development by butoh artist Salome Nieto and composer Jami Reimer. The collaborators have followed the monarch to Point Pelee Ontario and the oyamel forests of Michoacan and are working a new work for butoh and music.
Follow along here and @jamisreimer and @mariasalomenieto for updates!

here you are singing
a sound installation for 4 speakers, carried objects, tallgrass birds, and Omas&#38;nbsp;here you are singing is a collaborative composition that follows the flight paths of grassland bird field recordings, oral history interviews, choral singing, poetry, and music to evoke and interrogate ideas of home. An adaptation of Sarah Ens's award-winning book-length poem Flyway (Turnstone Press), this interdisciplinary and immersive sound installation traces questions of migration and memory, displacement and settlement in a time of climate emergency and global refugee crisis. Spatialized through four different speakers, mothers speak Plautdietsch to their children huddled in bomb shelters, a dawn chorus of prairie birds rings out at the 1875 landing site of Mennonite immigrants to Manitoba, a cherished accordion is carried across international borders, and stories of family, loss, war, and survival are shared around kitchen tables.
The tall grass prairie is the most endangered ecosystem in North America and a habitat crucial to the survival of many at-risk plant, bird, insect, and amphibian species. here you are singing invites audience members to step into a sound-world of what remains of the tall grass prairie in Manitoba—in the wake of colonization and the spread of industrial agriculture—and encounter the songs of asylum seekers who call this place home.

I’m an interdisicplinary performance maker, composer, and educator from Winnipeg, Canada on Treaty 1 territory. From choral music to field recording practices, I’m preoccupied with the conjoining potentials of&#38;nbsp; voice, turning to choruses as a model and metaphor for conceptualising how voices sound out living networks. In my current research with frog mating choruses, I listen for the vocal artefacts that emerge between frogs, humans, and recording technologies within the sonic practices of bioacoustics. Voice is at once a philosophical playground as well as my favourite instrument to sing!

When I’m not field recording or writing or composing about amphibians, insects, or other strange utterances, you can find me working in a range of collaborations from musical theatre to composing for dance and film. I teach choir, performing arts, and&#38;nbsp; experimental sound workshops in schools between Canada and Switzerland. &#38;nbsp;I hold a Bachelor of Music from Canadian Mennonite University, a Bachelor of Education from University of Manitoba, and a Master of Fine Arts from the School for Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. I currently reside on the stolen ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations known as Vancouver.&#38;nbsp;

a frog of chorus&#38;nbsp;

How to record a voice for bioacoustic analysis:
1. First, listen for the species you are trying to document. The goal here is minimal interference: see how close you can get without frightening off the frog. Make contact and remain invisible at the same time.
2. Busy yourself with the mechanics of transduction. Soundwaves should end up converted into electricity in your brain and into a .wav file in your hand.
3. Once sufficient vocalization is captured, speak into the microphone the date, species, elevation, temperature conditions, and any other details that may prove relevant. One day soon, these species may be added to those already extinct.
Short animation shown at Small File Media Festival 2022. Winner for categories "Molecules" (1 mb per minute). Sounds sourced from recently extinct frogs and their recordists in the Atlantic forest.

Thanks to Boana albopunctata and Adenomera marmorata. Thanks to the Fonoteca Neotropical Jaques Viellard for the following endangered and extinct recordings: Boana cymbalum, Hylodes magalhaesi, Physalaemus soaresi (may you fight the good fight, rest in peace, and reincarnate the frequency openings left behind)

Mouth

Video and contact mic installation, May 2021, School for Contemporary Arts, Masters of Fine Arts Spring Show some things may pass

"Mouth" explores the openings that distribute and partake in voice. Performed with four handmade microphones, the work follows the performer as she meets microphone creatures and finds voice lurking in the passageways, handheld speakers, body, and the textures between them. What new voice emerges in this strangest of contact zones?&#38;nbsp;
